zbMATH — the leading mathematics community database
at the ICM conference in Seoul

FIZ Karlsruhe presents prestigious mathematics database
with new interface and networking features

FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure will be present at the International Congress of Mathematicians, the most important quadrennial event in mathematics held in Seoul from August 13-21. With the prestigious zbMATH database the essential information infrastructure in mathematics will be presented at FIZ Karlsruhe’s booth, together with the Open Access digital libraries ELibM and EuDML.

zbMATH is the world’s most comprehensive reference database in mathematics (dating back to 1868)-  Its new interface connects traditional review and bibliographic information with modern databases of mathematicians, references, and mathematical software. New features presented in Seoul include the community interface that enables users to enrich their own author profile or those of their colleagues, and the formula search combined with other facets.

“Networking becomes more and more important, also in mathematics, and to know the scientific output of a scientist helps to find appropriate collaboration partners”, says Prof. Gert-Martin Greuel, editor in chief of zbMATH. “It is important to give the community the opportunity to contribute additional information to their author profiles, especially since scientific organizations often rely on author-based statistics as a basis for critical action as e.g. funding and hiring decisions.”

At the opening ceremony of the ICM, the Fields Medal, officially known as the International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics, has been awarded to 4 mathematicians. Often described as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics, it is regarded as the most prestigious award in the field of mathematics. The scientific achievements of the medalists can be explored through their profiles and reviews of their work at zbMATH:

Prof. Greuel will represent FIZ Karlsruhe and zbMATH in the World Digital Mathematics Panel. He and Dr. Olaf Teschke, Head of the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at FIZ Karlsruhe, will also take part in an IMU (International Mathematical Union) meeting of prominent mathematicians, representatives of information services, and developers to form an initiative for a Global Digital Mathematics Library.

For many years the IMU has been supporting mathematics and advanced mathematical education in the developing world. On August 12, the MENAO (Mathematics in Emerging Nations: Achievements and Opportunities) Symposium organized by the IMU will also be hosted in Seoul. FIZ Karlsruhe and the European Mathematical Society are pleased to support the developing countries by offering free access to zbMATH and the book donation program.

Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, President and CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe, hopes for many visitors and fruitful discussions: “zbMATH is our flagship database. It is built with tremendous commitment and support of the mathematics community. We continuously invest our best efforts to enhance its premium quality accordingly to the changing needs in research.  We very much look forward  to this  event to meet friends and supporters of zbMATH at our booth and at the reviewers’ reception.”
