ProQuest’s Civil War Collection Honored by ACRL Choice

Never-before-published set of U.S. historical documents named “Outstanding Academic Title” for 2017

A unique and comprehensive set of Civil War manuscripts and records is now available on a History Vault™ module – and Choice has recognized it as one of the magazine’s 2017 Outstanding Academic Title award-winners.

The new History Vault Confederate Military Manuscripts and Records of Union Generals and the Union Army module features previously unpublished collections of papers from Solders, civilians, spies, scouts, guides and detectives; documents on military discipline from courts-martial; and records of the U.S. Colored Troops. The module includes more than 300,000 pages of primary-source material, including images. Content is sourced from the Virginia Historical Society, Louisiana State University, University of Texas at Austin and the University of Virginia.

“This rich and varied collection is a valuable resource for all levels of research on the American Civil War period,” says the Choice review, which concludes by calling the module “highly recommended.”

The module is part of the History Vault Southern Life, Slavery and the Civil War collection, which also includes modules on slavery, plantation life and post-war reconstruction.

“We’re honored that Choice recognizes ProQuest’s commitment to curating the most important content for American history research,” said Susan Bokern, ProQuest Vice President, Product Management. “More than ever, it’s crucial for students and faculty to study the conflict, politics and social movements that shaped our world. We continue to grow History Vault to support their research outcomes.”

History Vault™ modules give researchers access to millions of primary source, cross-searchable, full-text and full-image documents covering the most important and widely studied topics in American History. With content not available anywhere else, it is the ideal resource for researchers in history, African American studies, women’s studies, political science, sociology, international studies and more.
