Maria Castresana joins Springer Nature
as new Chief People Officer

Embodying the company’s mission to be part of progress, Maria will lead people-focused initiatives and shape a global working environment that enables scientific advancement across the publishers’ research, health, education and professional divisions.

Maria Castresana has joined Springer Nature as its new Chief People Officer reporting to the Chief Executive. Maria takes over from Gregor Karolus, Chief HR Officer following his retirement at the end of October. As Chief People Officer, she is part of Springer Nature’s Executive Committee.

Bringing over 25 years of experience working in companies committed to research and scientific progress, Maria will be responsible for overseeing the execution of Springer Nature’s people strategy – Be Part of Progress – with focus on talent attraction, employee engagement and an inclusive culture. She will create the conditions for employees to reach their full potential as they work with the academic community to share knowledge and bring greater understanding to the world.

Frank Vrancken Peeters, Chief Executive of Springer Nature, said:

“Our colleagues make us who we are as a company, and I am incredibly proud of the diverse, equitable and inclusive culture that we have built under Gregor Karolus’s leadership across his 27 years with us and thank him for all that he has done to establish Springer Nature as a leading employer.

“I am delighted, however, to welcome Maria to the team. We are a purpose-driven company where all colleagues are supported in their personal and professional ambitions as we work together to be part of progress. With her wealth of experience Maria will be instrumental in reinforcing this culture and commitment further, and I look forward to working with her to achieve that.”

Maria joins Springer Nature from MorphoSys, a biopharma company that develops innovative cancer treatments, having previously held global and national senior human resources roles with companies such as Bayer and Boehringer Ingelheim.

Speaking of her appointment, Maria Castresana commented:

"I feel honoured to join Springer Nature and to work with so many talented colleagues in the pursuit of scientific progress and information integrity. The leadership and values of Springer Nature that I have already experienced, speak to my own. I really look forward to leveraging the power of our people to help solve the big questions of our time".
